The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP)—formerly known as AINP—is Alberta’s official provincial nominee program (PNP). It allows the province to select workers, graduates, entrepreneurs, and rural candidates who can help support Alberta’s economic growth and long-term labour needs. Successful applicants receive a provincial nomination, which significantly increases their chances of obtaining Canadian permanent residency (PR).

As Canada stabilizes immigration levels and focuses on workers already contributing to the labour market, AAIP has become one of the strongest pathways to PR for individuals living, studying, or working in Alberta.

1. Why Alberta Has Its Own Immigration Program

Alberta faces growing labour shortages in sectors such as health care, technology, engineering, construction, agriculture, tourism, and transportation. AAIP helps Alberta:

  • Select people with the right skills
  • Retain workers who are already contributing to the province
  • Support population growth in both urban and rural areas
  • Help employers facing chronic labour gaps

AAIP is jointly managed by the provincial government and IRCC, and its annual nomination quota is set by the federal government, not the province.

2. Main AAIP Categories

AAIP has two major categories:

A. Worker Streams (for skilled and semi-skilled workers)

These streams support Alberta employers and attract workers with strong ties to the province.

1) Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS)

Best for workers already working in Alberta.
Eligibility highlights:

  • Valid work permit
  • Full-time job offer from an Alberta employer
  • 12 months Alberta experience (or alternative experience requirements)
  • Language: CLB 4–7 depending on occupation
  • Eligible occupation and proper licensing

Advantages:

  • Does not require Express Entry
  • Very strong pathway for TFWs in Alberta

2) Alberta Express Entry Stream

A provincial nomination for candidates in the federal Express Entry pool.

Alberta selects candidates who:

  • Work in priority sectors (health care, tech, trades, agriculture)
  • Have strong ties to Alberta (work, education, relatives)
  • Have CRS scores often much lower than other provinces (many draws between 50–70)

Benefits:

  • Nomination gives +600 CRS points → PR almost guaranteed
  • Fast processing through Express Entry

3) Rural Renewal Stream

Designed to boost population and labour force in smaller communities.

Requirements:

  • Job offer from a participating rural community
  • Commitment to live in the community
  • CLB 4–5 depending on occupation

Strong option for workers in hospitality, trades, health care, trucking, and agriculture.

4) Tourism and Hospitality Stream (introduced for Alberta’s service economy)

For workers in:

  • Hotels
  • Restaurants
  • Tourism services
  • Food and beverage operations

Requires:

  • Full-time job offer
  • Related work experience
  • Valid work permit

B. Entrepreneur Streams (for business owners and investors)

These pathways allow business-minded individuals to start or purchase a business in Alberta.

1) Rural Entrepreneur Stream

Ideal for investors who want to run a business in rural Alberta.

  • Investment: CAD 100,000–200,000+
  • Minimum net worth: typically CAD 300,000–600,000
  • Experience in managing/owning a business
  • CLB 4

2) Graduate Entrepreneur Stream

For graduates from Alberta post-secondary institutions who want to launch a business.

  • Must hold a valid PGWP
  • Own at least 34% of the business

3) Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream

For innovators who graduated outside Canada within the last 10 years.

  • Requires endorsement from a designated agency
  • Investment $100,000–$200,000
  • Strong business proposal

4) Farm Stream

For experienced farmers who want to establish or buy a farm in Alberta.

  • Significant agricultural experience required
  • High investment level (often $500,000+)

3. Why AAIP Is Popular Among Immigrants

AAIP has a reputation for being accessible, flexible, and practical, especially compared to other provinces:

  • Lower CRS cutoffs than Ontario or BC
  • Strong opportunities for workers in trades, health care, and industry
  • Options for both skilled and semi-skilled roles
  • Clear pathways for international graduates and temporary workers
  • Rural streams with relatively simple requirements
  • Entrepreneur options with lower net-worth thresholds compared to other provinces

For many individuals already living and working in Alberta, AAIP is often the fastest route to PR.

4. How Federal Quotas Affect Alberta

  • The federal government sets the number of nominations Alberta can issue each year.
  • Alberta’s quota for 2025 was 6,600 nominations.
  • The quota for 2026 has not yet been released, but it is expected to remain similar or slightly adjusted.

Because demand is high, Alberta often manages intake carefully, opening and closing streams depending on nomination availability.
