What Is a Visitor Record?

A Visitor Record is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that authorizes you to remain in Canada beyond your initial stay period. It is not a visa and does not allow re-entry if you leave the country.

You need a Visitor Record if:

  • You want to extend your stay as a tourist in Canada.
  • You’re switching from another status (e.g., study permit or work permit) to visitor.
  • You were given a specific date to leave and want to remain longer.

When Should You Apply?

You should apply at least 30 days before your current status expires (usually the date on your passport stamp or existing visitor record).

Step-by-Step Application Process

1. Gather the Required Documents

Prepare the following:

  • Proof of current status (e.g., stamp in your passport, current visitor record)
  • A letter of explanation stating why you want to extend your stay
  • Proof of financial support (e.g., bank statements, sponsor letter)
  • Photocopy of passport (especially the page with your entry stamp and biographical data)
  • Any other documents relevant to your case (e.g., travel insurance, medical documents)

2. Create or Sign In to an IRCC Online Account

  • Visit the IRCC website and create or log in to your secure account.

3. Start a New Application

  • Choose “Visitor visa, study and/or work permit” under “Start an application.”
  • When prompted, choose “Extend my stay as a visitor.”

4. Fill Out the Application Form (IMM 5708)

  • Complete the form IMM 5708: Application to Change Conditions, Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Visitor or Temporary Resident Permit Holder.
  • Upload the completed form in your online account.

5. Pay the Fees

  • You may pay online through your IRCC account using a credit or debit card.

6. Submit the Application

  • After uploading your documents and paying the fee, submit your application.
  • You’ll receive a confirmation message in your IRCC account.

After You Apply

  • You can stay in Canada legally while waiting for a decision, as long as you applied before your status expired. This is known as implied status.
  • Processing times vary. Check the IRCC processing time tool for updates.

Tips for a Strong Application

  • Be clear and honest about why you want to stay longer.
  • Show that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay.
  • Include evidence of funds and strong ties to your home country.
  • If a friend or family member is supporting you, include a support letter and their financial documents.
